Plastering Techniques for Strawbale Construction

This is our second workshop in the strawbale construction series taught by Shawn Hayter of Green Planet Homes Inc. The plaster coat covering the strawbale construction is a critical element in the building process. It gives the structure its rigidity, and is an integral factor in what makes the strawbale house “healthy”.
Shawn will discuss the operational theory of strawbale and different plastering techniques. He will explain how to plan your plastering job and plastering techniques. Participants will learn plaster mixes for Lime, Stucco, and Earthen Plasters and the advantages of each. Enjoy some hands-on time as you apply plasters to an existing strawbale structure. Also covered -if time permits- will be: using milk paints, silica dispersion paints and different finishing options in plastering.

Shawn is the owner and operator of Green Planet Homes Inc.
near Regina. After a career as a Network Technologist Shawn began to long
for the pleasure of tangible results from his work at the day's end. He
also became more aware of what effect we are all having on the planet
and what we can do to reduce our impact on it. Shawn's experience in strawbale
construction began in the summer of 2002 when he volunteered at an owner-built
strawbale job site during various stages of the build. The project was
at the time the largest load-bearing straw bale building in North America.
Shawn began apprenticing under Ben Polley of Harvest Homes in January
of 2003. During this time, Shawn gained experience in load bearing, infill
and modified post and beam straw bale construction. He has been involved
in 10 different projects including managing a 3,000 sqft project for Harvest
Homes in Oakville, and the Nolalu Eco Centre, North Ontario’s largest solar-powered strawbale facility.
Shawn is currently a Director on the board of the Ontario Straw Bale Building Coalition (OSBBC), an organization promoting straw bale construction to building officials, banks, insurance companies and the public. He likes his straw tightly packed.
