You keep hearing about strawbale building and wonder what it means? Are you interested
in a different and affordable way of building that can help you live lighter
on this earth – yet is at least as durable as conventional building?
Then join us for this fun and interesting workshop taught by Shawn Hayter of
Green Planet Homes Inc. Shawn will discuss the history and philosophy of strawbale
building and its place amidst modern construction techniques. You will hear the
theories that explain why strawbale is a safe, strong, and environmentally friendly
choice for building, and why it’s experiencing the current strong resurgence.
Participants will learn practical construction techniques, and get plenty of
hands-on experience in constructing a small building on site, and learn how to
deal with corners, doors, windows, and roofs.
Those who wish can book a room at the Eco Centre for the duration of this
workshop at the discounted rate of $ 50.00 (single) and $ 60.00 (double),
including a breakfast. Please let us know in advance.

Shawn Hayter is the owner and operator of Green Planet Homes Inc. near
Regina.
After a career as a Network Technologist Shawn began to long for the pleasure
of tangible results from his work at the day's end. He also became more
aware of what effect we are all having on the planet and what we can do
to reduce our impact on it. Shawn's experience in strawbale construction
began in the summer of 2002 when he volunteered at an owner-built strawbale
job site during various stages of the build. The project was at the time
the largest load-bearing straw bale building in North America.
Shawn began apprenticing under Ben Polley of Harvest Homes in January
of 2003. During this time, Shawn gained experience in load bearing, infill
and modified post and beam straw bale construction. He has been involved
in 10 different projects including managing a 3,000 sqft project for Harvest
Homes in Oakville, and the Nolalu Eco Centre, North Ontario’s largest
solar-powered strawbale facility.
Shawn is currently a Director on the board of the Ontario Straw Bale Building
Coalition (OSBBC), an organization promoting straw bale construction to
building officials, banks, insurance companies and the public. He likes
his straw tightly packed.
